Hi Damian,
for the past 3 1/2 years I've been around many oncologists and nurses on a regular basis due to my son's battle with Leukemia. I find it interesting that I never thought of any similarity until I just read your blog. I find it fascinating. My son and I have built positive rapports with his doctors and the outcome has been good. I have found that building positive rapports with my students definately makes for a more productive year with them. Of course, not every body is happy all the time but with good communication we try to get to the root of a problem in a calm and constructive way. My students' episodes of inapproriate behavior have been very minimal this year.

What a great insight that the patient/student interaction between doctor/teacher is very similar. Being a special ed teacher I have the opportunity to develop relationships with students over time. It is a challenge not to become a surrogate parent to some students. The irony is that when we give students the opportunity to express themselves, that expression may not be what we think is right.
